The main objective of the present study is to evalu ate the antimicrobial and antioxidant potential of Dhasalavana dhravagam (DLD) a well-known classical drug selecte d from the Siddha classical literature, “Kannusamiy am Ennum Vaidhya Segaram. The antimicrobial property o f the DLD was studied against Gram-negative and Gra m- positive microorganisms using the agar well diffusi on method. The result of antimicrobial screening st udy projects that the drug DLD exhibited bigger zone of inhibiti on of about 08- 26 mm against Staphylococcus aureus followed by this 09- 25 mm of zone against Klebsiella pneumo nia, 09- 24 mm of zone against Bacillus Subtilis an d 07- 22 mm zone against Salmonella typhimurium at the concentr ation of 250mg/ml. Antioxidant potential of DLD wa s evaluated by using DPPH radical scavenging assay. T he result obtained from the study shows that DLD po ssess potential antioxidant activity (91.3%) relatively n ear to the standard drug. From the study it was con cluded that the drug DLD has promising antimicrobial, antioxidant a ctivity and hence this siddha formulation may serve as a prospective drug for treating several infectious di seases in near future.
